 WHAT IS TRUTH?

By Rick Rapanos
Edited by Bob Stokes

I am sure you have heard it said: “Well that may be true for you, but it’s not true for me.” Or, “That’s your truth not my truth.”

These are both false statements. Why? Because if something is true, then it must be true for everyone, no matter what it is. If it is true for me, then it has to be true for you, otherwise, it could not be called truth.

So, what is “TRUTH?”

In the Bible, Jesus said in the New Testament, in the Gospel (Gospel means “Good News”) of John chapter 14, verse 6:

“I AM THE WAY, THE TRUTH AND THE LIFE; NO ONE COMES TO THE FATHER BUT THROUGH ME.”

Jesus did not say He is “one” of the ways, He said He is THE way, the ONLY way.

What does Jesus mean when He says He is THE way?

It means that you cannot find salvation apart from Jesus Christ. You cannot find it in any other god or religious world-view, because no other religion is compatible with Christianity. This is a very bold claim to make and offensive to many people, which is why Christianity is attacked more than any other religion in the world. It is a claim that

YOU will have to accept or reject sooner or later. There is no middle ground.

What does Jesus mean when He says He is THE TRUTH?

In the Gospel of John chapter 8, verses 45 and 46 Jesus is speaking and says:

BUT BECAUSE I SPEAK THE TRUTH YOU DO NOT BELIEVE ME. WHICH ONE OF YOU CONVICTS ME OF SIN? IF I SPEAK THE TRUTH, WHY DO YOU NOT BELIEVE ME?

In the verses that follow, Jesus’ unbelieving critics quickly change the subject. Why? Because they could not prove that Jesus was a sinner, even though they were constantly following Him around to try and trap Him in what He had to say about Himself and many other subjects. So, if He was without sin, then He must have been telling the TRUTH and not lying, as lying is a sin. It was in their best interest to try and prove that Jesus was a sinner and a fraud, but they could not do it. These unbelievers are no different than the ones today. They cannot prove it either. It is not that they couldn’t believe, it is that they refused to believe

Don’t let this happen to you!

What does Jesus mean when He says He is THE LIFE?

It means that eternal life can only be found by putting your FAITH and TRUST in Jesus Christ.

What does it mean to have FAITH and TRUST in Jesus Christ?

To have this FAITH and TRUST is to RELY on Christ, and to TRUST that what He says is TRUE. He is the giver of life because He created all things. In the Bible there is a book that is part of the New Testament called Colossians, where it says of Jesus, in chapter 1, verse 16:

FOR BY HIM ALL THINGS WERE CREATED, BOTH IN THE HEAVENS AND ON THE EARTH, VISIBLE AND INVISIBLE, WHETHER THRONES OR DOMINIONS OR RULERS OR AUTHORITIES-ALL THINGS HAVE BEEN CREATED THROUGH HIM AND FOR HIM.”

Also in the New Testament there is a book called Hebrews, where it says of Jesus in chapter 1, verse 10:

“AND, YOU, LORD, IN THE BEGINNING LAID THE FOUNDATION OF THE EARTH, AND THE HEAVENS ARE THE WORKS OF YOUR HANDS.”

This saving life (SALVATION) is a FREE GIFT, but only for those who receive it.

What is so wonderful about this FREE GIFT?

It is wonderful because it is not based on the good things we do in life, but based on what Jesus Christ has already done for us. Can you imagine if salvation had to be earned by the good things we do? How much would be enough? How many good things would you have to do in your life to please God and make it into Heaven? The answer is that no amount of good works can ever be accumulated by you to make you righteous and pleasing to God. You cannot earn your salvation. In the New Testament book of Ephesians in chapter 2, verses 8 and 9 it says:

“FOR BY GRACE YOU HAVE BEEN SAVED THROUGH FAITH; AND NOT OF YOURSELVES, IT IS THE GIFT OF GOD; NOT AS A RESULT OF WORKS, SO THAT NO ONE MAY BOAST.”

This “Grace” means, the “goodness and mercy of God.” Again, in the book of Ephesians chapter 2, verse 4 it says:

“BUT GOD, BEING RICH IN MERCY, BECAUSE OF HIS GREAT LOVE WITH WHICH HE LOVED US.”

What, then, does SALVATION mean?

It means that after you die, you have a glorious PROMISE from God that your life does not end with the death of your physical body. What a PROMISE to be thankful for-that there is something much more glorious and much better than this corrupt world we live in, and that after we die it is not the end.

The hope and PROMISE to those who believe in Jesus is that they will live on for eternity in a beautiful paradise.

What does it mean, then, to BELIEVE in Jesus?

It means to not only believe in what He says but who He is: He is God, who came down from Heaven to become a man to pay for YOUR sins, by His sacrifice.

What is this SACRIFICE? Why did Jesus have to be the one to pay for it? Why did a sacrifice have to be paid at all in the first place? This sacrifice is that Jesus willingly died on the cross for YOU, suffered for YOU, and rose from the dead for YOU, so YOU can be forgiven for YOUR sins. He took all the burden of YOUR sins upon Himself, meaning that He paid YOUR penalty because you could not pay for it yourself. The burden of that dept is too much for you to ever be able to pay. So Jesus took it upon Himself to do it for you in your place. He was YOUR substitute.

But, you may ask,

“Why do I have to be ‘FORGIVEN’ for anything?”

Because mankind is sinful, and God cannot be in the presence of sin, because God is HOLY and PURE. Unless God could find a way to bring mankind and Him back together, all hope for humanity would be lost at physical death, and they would be cast into a literal, horrible place called hell. Sin is a crime against God. It is a crime that requires punishment, because God cannot tolerate sin. It is the punishment of death-meaning separation from God for eternity in a literal place called hell.

So, how does God bring mankind and Himself back together?

The sacrifice that is required would have to be a perfect sacrifice. Because mankind is the sinner, no other sacrifice would do except a human sacrifice. Someone has to pay the penalty for you in your place, because you are not good enough to redeem yourself. So God had to find a perfect human to take your place, and because no human could ever be found who is perfect, God had to become that perfect man (Jesus Christ). Jesus Christ, then, has two natures. He is fully God and fully man. He is the second person of the Triune God. There is: Father, Son, (Jesus Christ) and the Holy Spirit.

So, by accepting the fact that Jesus took YOUR place and carried YOUR sins to the cross to die for YOU, you are declared RIGHTEOUS. You are not “made” righteous, you are DECLARED righteous, because the only one who is truly righteous is God. To believers, that means sin free. When we truly desire repentance, that act of the will is what allows us to be declared righteous, and that enables us to be able to stand in the presence of a HOLY God. ALL our sins of the past and present, not just one or two, but ALL our sins, no matter how many or how horrible they may be, will be totally forgotten by God, never to be remembered again. That is TRULY something to be thankful for!

In the Bible, in part of the Old Testament there is a book called Psalms, where we have this wonderful TRUE PROMISE from God. In Psalms 103 verse 12 it says:

“AS FAR AS THE EAST IS FROM THE WEST, SO FAR HAS HE REMOVED OUR TRANSGRESSIONS FROM US.”

He has PROMISED (and God cannot break a promise) that if we are truly sorry for our sins and forsake (confess) them, He will forgive us. This PROMISE is found in the Bible in the New Testament book of First John chapter 1, verse 9:

“IF WE CONFESS OUR SINS, HE IS FAITHFUL AND RIGHTEOUS TO FORGIVE US OUR SINS AND TO CLEANSE US FROM ALL UNRIGHTEOUSNESS”

Imagine for a moment that all the sins you have ever committed in your life were written on a white board. Now imagine that white board suddenly being wiped clean, and those sins never to be remembered by God again. That is what happens once you receive Jesus Christ as YOUR Lord and Savior! What an amazing

TRUE PROMISE!!

You may say to yourself, “ I haven’t got time to think about this right now, I am too busy with my life. Besides, God is supposed to be a God of love isn’t He? He would not send me to a place called hell to suffer for eternity.”

God is love that is TRUE, but first and foremost, He is a HOLY GOD. YOU, in your sins, cannot stand in the presence of a HOLY GOD. It is a lie that He will not send those to hell for rejecting Him. This may be very difficult for you to accept, but none the less it is TRUE.

If you refuse to receive Jesus Christ the one who created you on this earth, while you are alive, then why would He allow you to continue to reject Him in Heaven? That is exactly what you would do. God does not force you to love and accept Him but gives you what you want-to be separated from Him for eternity. If God forced you to love Him, then that would not be love at all.

The unbeliever thinks it is no great threat to be separated from God for eternity, as this is what they want in the first place. However, they do not realize that their separation will be in torment. Part of the torment of hell is that they will feel God’s presence there in the fullness of His Divine wrath.

Here is how you can get this free gift of salvation:

FREE GIFT OF SALVATION

1)   You must admit that you are a sinner in need of forgiveness, and that you cannot save yourself from your sins. You need to repent and ask God to forgive you of those sins. To repent means, “To have a change of heart.” You no longer continue to do those sins. You want to change your life.

2)   You must believe that Jesus died for you, and that He rose from the dead, and therefore is YOUR Savior. In the Gospel of John chapter 6, verse 47 Jesus says:

“TRULY, TRULY, I SAY TO YOU, HE WHO BELIEVES HAS ETERNAL LIFE.”

This is a TRUE PROMISE from God, and remember that God cannot lie. It does not say that you “might” have or “could” have eternal life, but that you “do” HAVE eternal life. In the New Testament book of 1st John chapter 5, verses 11-13, we again have this TRUE PROMISE:

“AND THE TESTIMONY IS THIS, THAT GOD HAS GIVEN US ETERNAL LIFE, AND THIS LIFE IS IN HIS SON. HE WHO HAS THE SON HAS THE LIFE; HE WHO DOES NOT HAVE THE SON OF GOD DOES NOT HAVE THE LIFE. THESE THINGS I HAVE WRITTEN TO YOU WHO BELIEVE IN THE NAME OF THE SON OF GOD, SO THAT YOU MAY KNOW THAT YOU HAVE ETERNAL LIFE.”

Notice that it says that you may KNOW that you have eternal life. Not think you have, or wonder if you have, but KNOW FOR SURE! This is a GUARANTEE from God!

What does it mean then to believe IN THE NAME of the Son ( Jesus Christ ) of God? It means to believe that He is the Messiah. Jesus’ last name is not CHRIST. Christ means Messiah. Jesus is called THE CHRIST. He is Jesus Messiah (Savior). If you receive Him as your Savior, you will be called a child of God, and be given eternal life in Heaven. In the Gospel of John chapter 1, verse 12, God gives us this TRUTH:

“BUT AS MANY AS RECEIVED HIM, TO THEM HE GAVE THE RIGHT TO BECOME CHILDREN OF GOD, EVEN TO THOSE WHO BELIEVE IN HIS NAME.”

3)   You must turn your life over to Jesus Christ. Instead of doing things your way, you truly need to do things God’s way. Once you do that you are a new person-the person God has always meant you to be. In the New Testament book of 2nd Corinthians we have this TRUE PROMISE from God in chapter 5, verse 17:

“THEREFORE IF ANYONE IS IN CHRIST, HE IS A NEW CREATURE; THE OLD THINGS PASSED AWAY; BEHOLD, NEW THINGS HAVE COME.”

If these steps are truly the desires of your heart, then tell God that in prayer. Prayer is simply talking to God. The words you use are not important, there is no magic in the words because the words cannot save you, your change of heart and desire to serve God does. You are also not saved by how you feel emotionally, because feelings change. So don’t expect fireworks to go off once you have received Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior. You salvation is based upon God’s PROMISES, not on a feeling you may have.

Also, right away, you should be baptized. It shows God that you are willing to be obedient to Him. It is also a public acknowledgement to everyone that you now want to do things God’s way. Baptism is a symbol. Going down in the water is representative of your old self being buried, and coming up out of the water is representative of your newness of life. Like being re-born.

Jesus has another TRUE PROMISE for you if you truly seek to know Him. It is found in the Gospel of John chapter 8, verse 32 where Jesus says:

“AND YOU WILL KNOW THE TRUTH, AND THE TRUTH WILL MAKE YOU FREE.”

If you read the Bible you will discover all that is really TRUE. You will learn wonderful and amazing things about God and His special plan for your life. But that special plan that He has for you will never materialize if you go down the wrong path in life as so many will do, and have done already. There is no second chance once you are dead. In the book of Hebrews chapter 9, verse 27 it says:

“AND INASMUCH AS IT IS APPOINTED FOR MEN TO DIE ONCE AND AFTER THIS COMES JUDGMENT.”

You will never experience the love of God and all the blessings that He is waiting to pour out upon your life, if you reject Him.

The biggest decision you will ever make in life is not whom you are going to marry, or what career you choose, or even where you will live. It is where you will spend eternity.

As you finish reading this booklet, you will have a choice to make. Your choice will have eternal consequences…..good or bad.

Choose to follow Jesus Christ, or choose to reject Him. Choose Jesus, and begin a new life. A life that God is eagerly waiting to reveal to………

YOU!!

We hope this booklet will have sparked an interest for further study on the TRUTHS contained here. There is much more that could be said that goes beyond the scope of this little booklet. But this booklet was written so that you may KNOW what is TRUE. Just as the Apostle John wrote in his book, the Gospel of John chapter 20, verse 31:

“BUT THESE HAVE BEEN WRITTEN SO THAT YOU MAY BELIEVE THAT JESUS IS THE CHRIST, THE SON OF GOD; AND THAT BELIEVING YOU MAY HAVE LIFE IN HIS NAME.”
